Eighth Judicial District Adult Drug Court celebrates 15th anniversary

Tuesday, April 19, 2016

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Eighth Judicial District (Jackson and Larimer counties) Adult Drug Court will celebrate its 15th anniversary in a ceremony from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2016, at the Larimer County Justice Center.

In 15 years of operation, the district’s Adult Drug Court has served 594 participants, 261 of whom have graduated from the intensive treatment and monitoring program, which serves as an alternative to incarceration for eligible participants to balance treatment and community safety. Of the 261 graduates, 92.6 percent remained free of new charges within one year of graduation and 78.8 percent remained free of new charges within three years.

“I always like to remember the concept of the TEAM approach,” said District Judge Daniel J. Kaup, who presides over the court. “TEAM stands for Together Everyone Achieves More. That is how an effective Drug Court team works and how a Drug Court program is effective and sustainable. We have a multidisciplinary team of people working in the best interest of the participant and the community in an effort to break the cycle of addiction and restore meaningful and productive lives for our participants.”

The Adult Drug Court program includes Judge Kaup and court staff along with representatives of the Probation Department, law enforcement, treatment personnel, alternative sentencing staff and the offices of the Public Defender and District Attorney.

The anniversary ceremony will be held in Courtroom 4C of the Larimer County Justice Center, with a short presentation at noon. A light lunch will be provided.

The court is one of 77 problem-solving courts in Colorado, including adult and juvenile drug courts, family/dependency and neglect drug courts, DUI courts, adult and juvenile mental-health courts, veteran trauma courts and truancy courts.
