Carl S. McGuire III named Chief Judge of the 13th Judicial District

DENVER – Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Brian D. Boatright has appointed the Honorable Carl S. McGuire III to serve as Chief Judge of the 13th Judicial District (Kit Carson, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington and Yuma counties).

He replaces Chief Judge Michael K. Singer, who was appointed to the District Court in 2003 and served as Chief Judge from 2009 to date. Judge McGuire’s appointment is effective July 20, 2021, the date upon which Judge Singer’s resignation as Chief Judge is effective.

“Chief Judge Singer is to be commended for his contributions as Chief Judge of the 13th Judicial District,” Chief Justice Boatright said. “I am pleased to appoint Judge McGuire to this important role. I am confident he has the characteristics necessary to be a successful leader and I look forward to working with him.”

Judge McGuire was appointed a District Court Judge for the 13th Judicial District in May 2016. He previously served as District Court Magistrate from 2013 to 2016, and a Washington County Court Judge from 2004 to 2016. In April 2012, Judge McGuire returned from a 10-month deployment in Afghanistan. Prior to taking the bench in 2004, he was a Judge Advocate in the Navy Reserve. Judge McGuire studied agricultural economics at Colorado State University and received his law degree from the University of Wyoming College of Law.

As Chief Judge, McGuire will serve as the administrative head of the13th Judicial District, responsible for appointing the Court Executive, Chief Probation Officer and Clerk of Court, assisting in the personnel, financial and case-management duties of the district, and seeing that the business of the courts is conducted efficiently and effectively.
