Two to graduate from 18th Judicial District's Recovery Court

Tuesday, March 31, 2015

CENTENNIAL, Colo. – Two participants who have completed a rigorous monitoring and treatment program in the Recovery Court of the 18th Judicial District (Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties) will graduate in a ceremony April 3, 2015.

The court, which opened its docket in October 2011, has 33 participants who have been accepted into the program by a multidisciplinary team including prosecutors, defense attorneys, probation and law enforcement officers and treatment professionals.

The Recovery Court, like other problem-solving courts for criminal defendants with substance dependence, is an alternative to incarceration that ensures community safety while holding participants accountable for their actions.  They are required to obtain treatment and must frequently report their progress to the court.

“Graduation from any problem-solving court is not the end of the journey,” Magistrate Janski said. “It is a continuing journey on the path to recovery; an inspiring example of the power of change accomplished only by the hard work of the client, commitment of the team, and cooperation of the professionals. Problem-solving courts work to ensure positive and sustainable lifelong impacts.”

The graduation ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Courtroom 14 of Courthouse 2 of the Arapahoe County Justice Center at 7325 S. Potomac Street in Centennial, following the court’s regular 1:30 p.m. docket.

Colorado is home to more than 70 problem-solving courts operating in each of the state’s 22 judicial districts. Such courts include adult and juvenile drug courts, family/dependency and neglect courts, DUI courts, adult and juvenile mental health courts and veteran trauma courts.
