In addition to the small claims handbook, there are some local policies or practices that you should be aware of.

This list may not be an all-inclusive list of requirements you may need for small claims court in your location. You may wish to contact the court you plan to file in to make sure you have all the information you need.

If defendant is contesting the claim, we require the answer to be filed prior to the court trial. If parties have written exhibits, we require them to have an original set for the court and a copy for the opposing party ready to go prior to court trial.
8 Ft. Collins / Loveland N/A Y Larimer County has two county court locations where Small Claims cases can be filed. One is in Fort Collins at 201 LaPorte Avenue and one is in Loveland at 810 East 10th Street. If the case is filed in Fort Collins, all documents must be filed in Fort Collins. If the case is filed in Loveland, all documents must be filed in Loveland.

ALL hearings are held in Fort Collins regardless of where the case is filed.

Hearings are held on:
Thursdays at 8:15 AM and at 1:15 PM;
Saturday sessions once a month at 8:15 a.m;
Evening sessions once a month at 6:15 p.m.

The location of your hearing will be given to you when you file your case. It is at the top of any paperwork served upon you.

Thursday small claims hearings are currently held at the Commissioners Hearing Room on 1st floor of the Larimer County Courthouse Offices at 200 W. Oak, Fort Collins, one block south of the Justice Center. Saturday and evening sessions are currently held at the Fort Collins Justice Center. Specific dates and hearing locations can be obtained by contacting the clerk's office at (970) 498-6100. Mediation will be required on the day of trial.
9 Garfield / Glenwood Springs .75/form N Small claims clerk available M-F 8am - 5pm (970) 945-5075. Small claims trials are held every Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. Parties will need to provide original and 2 copies of exhibits for trial. If an interpreter is needed it is your responsibility to provide one. We will not require that the answer be filed before heading into court since the Judge will encourage parties to discuss case before case is called up for the trial. If an agreement is not reached at that time, defendant will need to proceed to the clerk's office to file answer and pay fee. Any and all correspondence needs to be in writing (i.e. continuances, dismissals etc).
9 Garfield (Associate court in Rifle) .75/form N Court trials are held every Tuesday at 9:00. Parties who need an interpreter must make arrangements for one to be present.
9 Rio Blanco (Rangely) .75/form N Trials are held every Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.
9 Pitkin County .75/form N Small Claims cases are accepted Mon-Fri 8-12 and 1-5. You can contact the small claims clerk at 970-925-7635. All small claims cases are heard on Wednesday's. You are responsible for providing copies of your exhibits to the other parties. If an interpreter is needed you are required to provide one at your expense. All correspondence should be in writing and parties are encouraged to discuss the case prior to trial.
11 Chaffee N/A Y Initial hearing for small claims is a setting. Parties are to appear with list of exhibits and witnesses at the setting that they intend to present at trial. All cases are referred to a mediator who is present at all hearings. If case is not settled a trial will be set. Small claims are heard the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month.
11 Fremont N/A Y Initial setting for small claims is for mediation with a local Attorney. If case is not settled, a trial will be set before the Judge, at which time the parties may present exhibits and witnesses. Small claims are heard the 3rd Thursday of each month.

13 Kit Carson N/A N Small claims trials are held at 9:00 a.m. the 1st Thursday of the Month.
13 Logan N/A N Court trials are set on Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m., except the 2nd Tuesday of each month. If parties have exhibits they wish to present to the court, they must bring 2 copies of the exhibits as well as the originals for the court.
13 Morgan N/A N If you have exhibits to present to the court in this case to defend your claim, you must bring the original and 2 copies of the exhibits with you on the trial date. If a party to the case needs an interpreter, that person must make arrangements for one to be present. Court trials are set on designated Mondays at 1:30 p.m.
13 Yuma NA N Requests for continuances must be submitted in writing. The defendant's request must be accompanied by an answer and filing fee. Parties are required to file the original return of service with the court on or before their scheduled court date. If a party to the case needs an interpreter, that person must make arrangements for one to be present. If parties have exhibits they wish to present to the court, they must bring 2 copies of the exhibits as well as the originals for the court. Parties to the case are to meet prior to court trial for settlement conference.
15 Cheyenne N/A N Court trials held 4th Tuesday of each month at 2 p.m.
16 Otero N/A N Small claims are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 3:00 pm with not more than three set at a time (Clerk will set at the discretion of the court calendar). Parties need to be 15 minutes early to file answers and mark exhibits. Parties are required to have copies or pay for copies of their exhibits for the other party.
17 Adams N/A N Creditors: we do not carry forms in our office.
18 Arapahoe (Littleton Only) .75/form N Arapahoe County's Small Claims court is located in Littleton.

Requests for continuance must be in writing, and must be accompanied by an answer and filing fee. Default judgments and dismissals will be issued 15 minutes after the scheduled court time.

Interpreters ARE NOT provided by the State. If you need an interpreter, you must bring one at your own cost. The interpreter should be at least 15 years of age, may not have an interest in who wins the case, or have been a witness to the facts of the case.

You will be required to speak with the opposing party prior to trial in an attempt to resolve the dispute and to view each others exhibits. If you require a deputy to oversee the meeting, please advise the clerk at the time you check-in.

If you require them, subpoena's are issued at the main clerk's office at either courthouse.
