In 1914, Judge Charles Holbrook ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in Francisco Maestas et al v. George H. Shone et al (the "Maestas Case").  The Maestas Case was filed in Alamosa.  It is regarded as one of the earliest challenges to school segregation in the United States, and it is perhaps the first such lawsuit in which the students and their families prevailed.
