Job Series: Senior Appellate Law Clerk
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Provides highly complex legal research and assistance to a justice or judge of the Colorado Appellate Courts.
Positions in this classification are distinguished from Appellate Law Clerks by service as an Appellate Law Clerk in the immediately preceding twelve months for the same justice or judge of the Colorado Appellate Courts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
Reviews selected appeals and prepares concise predisposition memoranda on cases assigned to chambers.
Researches and annotates laws, opinions, briefs, and case law. Presents an analysis of the existing body of law relating to the issues in cases warranting a full opinion.
Checks the accuracy of parties' statements of fact and the applicability of the legal authorities relied upon.
Reads and digests opinions, briefs, motions and extracts excerpts pertinent to points of law and fact. Compiles references on laws and decisions necessary for legal determination.
Edits all opinions written by chambers.
Some positions may serve as bailiff at oral arguments.
Attends meetings and training as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Responsible for one's own work product and some positions may provide guidance, assistance, or mentorship to less knowledgeable or experienced coworkers, volunteers, or interns. This may include scheduling of work, instructing in work methods, and reviewing work products.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited law school and service as an Appellate Law Clerk during the immediately preceding twelve months for the same justice or judge of the Colorado Appellate Courts.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands and arms to perform repetitive motions; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENTOccasionally handles emergency or crisis situations; frequently subject to interruptions, and multiple calls and inquiries. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
