Kristy Martinez was appointed to the Boulder County Court in January 2019. Prior to her appointment, Judge Martinez was the Director of the Korey Wise Innocence Project at the University of Colorado Law School. In 2019, CU Law awarded her the Honorary Order of the Coif for her contribution to CU and the legal profession. She taught post-conviction litigation, wrongful conviction, negotiation, and educational policy. Before working at CU Law, she worked in private practice focusing on criminal defense at the trial, appellate, and post-conviction levels. Additional areas of her practice included domestic relations and dependency and neglect. During 2015-2018, Judge Martinez served as a member and then Chair of the Judicial Performance Commission in the 20th Judicial District. She began her career as a Deputy District Attorney in Adams County. Judge Martinez graduated from the University of Denver College of Law and was admitted to the Colorado Bar in 2000.
