Panel discussion. The First Amendment doesn’t guarantee only the freedom of the press. The protesters who have gathered in Colorado over such issues as immigration, the war in Iraq and Columbus Day also are protected. Recent controversy over the federal government’s warrantless wiretapping of telephone conversations of U.S. citizens has raised new debate involving freedom of speech. When First Amendment rights conflict with the government’s job of preserving the peace and public safety, the courts often are asked to balance these competing goals. Panel members will discuss their strategies and views of the battleground.
9:45–10 a.m.
