Lake County Sobriety Court celebrates fifth anniversary

Thursday, September 10, 2015

LEADVILLE, Colo. – The Lake County Sobriety Court will celebrate its fifth anniversary with a ceremony and reception on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015.  The event will take place at the Lake County Justice Center, 505 Harrison Ave., Leadville, CO 80461, at 4 p.m. in the courtroom.  The public is invited to attend.

The court’s first docket was called in July 2010 after a small group of people (County Court Judge Wayne Patton, Probation Officer Lisa Morton and Alpine Springs Counseling represented by Carlos Abel) gathered to form this problem-solving addiction court in rural Colorado with just two participants. The vision of the court was to guide alcoholics and addicts toward long-term recovery and out of the criminal justice system.

Since, those early days the court’s treatment team has grown to include the district attorney’s office represented by Mark Franklin; defense counsel, Lindsey Parlin; the Lake County Sheriff’s Department represented by Danielle Gonzales; Solvista Health therapist Heather Adams; and Fifth Judicial District Problem Solving Court Coordinator, Karen Hoeger.  Today, the court has 11 active participants.

The court has served 47 participants since its inception and has successfully graduated a total of 25 participants boasting a 69 percent success rate overall.  Participants in the program agree to actively engage in treatment and counseling, make regular court appearances, and are intensively supervised. Offenders who desire a life change willingly come into the program which benefits them, their families, and the community.  Problem Solving Courts nationwide have proven to reduce recidivism, reduce substance abuse, reunite families and turn repeat offenders into productive and contributing members of society.
