Four to graduate from 18th Judicial District Wellness Court

Tuesday, April 7, 2015

CENTENNIAL, Colo. – After more than two years of intensive supervision and treatment, four participants in the 18th Judicial District (Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties) Wellness Court will graduate in a ceremony set for April 9, 2015.

The Wellness Court, presided over by Magistrate Kathleen Janski, enrolls participants who otherwise would have stayed in jail.  With about 40 participants, the problem-solving court brings significant savings to Arapahoe County and state taxpayers by keeping offenders accountable and safely in their communities rather than incarcerating them.

“Graduation from any problem-solving court is not the end of the journey,” Magistrate Janski said. “It is a continuing journey on the path to recovery; an inspiring example of the power of change accomplished only by the hard work of the client, commitment of the team, and cooperation of the professionals. Problem-solving courts work to ensure positive and sustainable lifelong impacts.”

The Wellness Court, which focuses its efforts on people in the criminal justice system who have mental health needs, is supported by the offices of the district attorney and public defender, the probation department, law enforcement and treatment professionals.

The court heard its first docket in October 2009.  The April 9 graduation ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m., following the court’s regular 1:30 p.m. docket, in Courtroom 14 of Courthouse 2 of the Arapahoe County Justice Center at 7325 S. Potomac Street in Centennial.

Colorado is home to more than 70 problem-solving courts operating in each of the state’s 22 judicial districts. Such courts include adult and juvenile drug courts, family/dependency and neglect courts, DUI courts, adult and juvenile mental health courts and veteran trauma courts.
