Gonzales appointed Chief Judge of the 12th Judicial District

Thursday, October 24, 2019

DENVER – Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan B. Coats has appointed the Hon. Michael A. Gonzales to serve as Chief Judge of the 12th Judicial District (Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande and Saguache counties), effective Jan. 15, 2020, upon the retirement of Chief Judge Pattie P. Swift.

Chief Judge Swift was appointed as Costilla County Court Judge in January 1989, and she was appointed as a District Court Judge in February 2003. She has served as Chief Judge of the 12th Judicial District and Water Judge of Water Division 3 since October 2011. A new water judge will be appointed at a later date.

“We certainly will miss Chief Judge Swift’s energy and her skillful leadership,” Chief Justice Coats said. “I feel confident that Judge Gonzales will be a fine leader for that large and diverse district.”

Judge Gonzales was appointed to the District Court in September 2011 after serving on the Alamosa County Court for four years. Before that, he served as Chief Deputy District Attorney in the 12th Judicial District and as an adjunct professor at Trinidad State College. He earned his undergraduate degree from Creighton University and his law degree from the University of Colorado.

As Chief Judge, Gonzales will serve as the administrative head of the 12th Judicial District, responsible for appointing the court executive, chief probation officer and clerk of court, assisting in the personnel, financial and case-management duties of the district, and seeing that the business of the courts is conducted efficiently and effectively.
