First Judicial District offers free one-on-one assistance to self-represented litigants

Event celebrates National Pro Bono Week

GOLDEN, Colo. – People representing themselves in court proceedings in the First Judicial District (Gilpin and Jefferson counties) will have the opportunity to meet with an attorney for 15 minutes to discuss their criminal, civil, domestic, probate or small-claims case.

The Pro Bono Week Celebration event, sponsored by the First Judicial District Bar Association, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019, in the atrium of the Jefferson Combined Court building at 100 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden.

There is no charge to meet with an attorney at the Pro Bono Week Celebration event.  Discussions will be confidential. The event is part of an American Bar Association program to focus the nation's attention on the increased need for pro bono services, attorneys volunteering or offering assistance at a reduced rate for the public good.

“We have been holding these semi-annual events for six years, making attorneys available to help the public.  More than 2200 of our citizens have received free legal advice.  Sometimes it is help with forms; many have questions about starting a case or about papers that have been served on them; often it is gaining a better understanding of the processes involved in their cases,” said First Judicial District Magistrate Marianne Marshall Tims. “Local lawyers have donated 698 hours to help the community understand and protect their rights. The dialogue has been immensely helpful to the people of Jefferson County.”
