Tuesday, July 23, 2019

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Wellness Court for Colorado’s Eighth Judicial District (Jackson and Larimer counties) will celebrate its fifth anniversary during a celebration at 3:30 p.m. on July 25, 2019, at the Larimer County Justice Center, 201 LaPorte Avenue.

The Wellness Court is a problem-solving court which serves as an alternative to incarceration for eligible participants, providing them with mental health treatment while protecting community safety. The voluntary program is designed to serve clients suffering from severe and persistent mental illnesses such as post-traumatic stress disorder from military service, major depression, or schizophrenia.

During its five years of operation, the court has served 132 participants, 28 of whom have graduated from the intensive treatment and monitoring program. The program was named Outstanding Team of the Year in the Colorado Judicial Department’s 2017 Judicial Excellence Awards.

The team includes Judge Julie Kunce Field and court staff along with representatives from the Probation Department; Larimer County Criminal Justice Services Division; SummitStone Health Partners; the District Attorney’s Office; Public Defender’s Office; and the Larimer County Sheriff’s Department; and police departments of Fort Collins, Loveland and Colorado State University.

The Wellness Court is one of 76 problem-solving courts in Colorado, including adult and juvenile drug courts, family/dependency and neglect drug courts, DUI courts, adult and juvenile mental health courts, veteran trauma courts and truancy courts.
