Amico appointed Chief Judge of the 18th Judicial District

DENVER – Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan B. Coats has appointed District Court Judge Michelle Amico to serve as Chief Judge of the 18th Judicial District (Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties).

She replaces the Hon. Carlos A. Samour, Jr. who was appointed to the Colorado Supreme Court on May 30, 2018. Judge Amico’s appointment is effective July 2, 2018.

“We are pleased to have Justice Samour join us on the Court and appreciate the leadership he exhibited during his tenure are Chief Judge,” Chief Justice Coats said. “I am confident Judge Amico possesses the skills and demeanor necessary to be a solid and effective leader for the 18th Judicial District. I look forward to working with her in this new role”

Judge Amico was appointed to the bench on May 31, 2012, and has served as the Presiding Judge of the Criminal Division at the Arapahoe County Justice Center since 2014.  She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Arizona in 1989, with a minor in Women’s Studies, and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law in 1993.  Prior to her appointment to the bench, she served for 18 years as a Deputy District Attorney and Chief Deputy District Attorney with the Denver District Attorney’s Office.  Judge Amico has volunteered in the community throughout her legal career.  She plays an active role in numerous committees designed to ensure equal access to justice and which focus on judicial education, including developing training programs for new judicial officers.

As Chief Judge, Amico will serve as the administrative head of the 18th Judicial District, responsible for appointing the district administrator, chief probation officer and clerk of court, assisting in the personnel, financial and case-management duties of the district, and seeing that the business of the courts is conducted efficiently and effectively.
