DENVER – Longtime Second Judicial District Judge John Coughlin died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017, of a heart attack at his home. He was 70.
“He was a kind, generous man,” Second Judicial District Chief Judge Michael Martinez said. “He was a courageous and outstanding jurist committed to a fair, even process for those whose cases he heard. A truly wonderful colleague who will definitely be missed.”
Judge Coughlin served as a Denver County Court Judge from 1980-85 and on the Denver District Court from 1985-2005. Upon his retirement from the bench, he joined the Judicial Arbiter Group (http://www.jaginc.com/arbiters/jcoughlin) where he continued to proudly represent and uphold the Rule of Law. He received his J.D. from the University of Colorado School of Law and his undergraduate degree from St. Mary’s College, California.
A celebration of Judge Coughlin’s life will be held at noon, Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 830 Elm Street, Denver, CO 80220.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Judge Coughlin may be sent to the Regis Jesuit High School Scholarship Fund.
