& Jury Operations:

The 1st Judicial District understands people may have concerns for their personal safety during the current pandemic.  We have implemented a jury trial plan outlined in CJO 2020-16, which has been approved by the Jefferson and Gilpin County Department of Public Health.  Safety precautions, such as social distancing, face masks, and rigorous cleaning protocols, are required throughout the courthouse and will remain priorities for the safety of the public, parties, jurors, and staff.

Social Distancing, Masks, and Signage

Social distancing is a critical factor to reduce the exposure to, and mitigate the spread of, COVID-19. According to recent health and safety protocols, people must wear masks and maintain six feet social distancing when conducting in-person proceedings or jury trials.  The Counties and Judicial District will require persons to wear masks and to maintain six feet social distancing throughout the courthouse.

Signs have been posted throughout the courthouses regarding COVID-19.  Signage includes instructions on entering the courthouse (including not to enter the courthouse if ill), safety precautions such as washing your hands and not touching your face and mouth, where to stand to maintain six feet social distancing, and limiting the number of people in the elevators.

•             You have been diagnosed with COVID-19 (“Novel Coronavirus”) and you have not received a subsequent test confirming that you are currently virus-free

•             You have been in direct contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 within the past fourteen (14) days.

•             If you believe that either of these scenarios pertain to you, please contact the Jury Commissioner via email: Jefferson County at or Gilpin County at

Jurors will be required to wear masks in the courthouse. Please have one with you as you enter the courthouse.  Additionally, jurors who report for jury service should take steps to protect themselves by frequently washing hands, using sanitizer, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Are you a high-risk individual as defined by the CDC?  High-risk or vulnerable persons may request a postponement of their jury service.  Request for postponement MUST be made five (5) business days prior to your appearance date.  Postponements will not be given the day you are scheduled to report for jury service.

To request a postponement please contact the Jury Commissioner via email: Jefferson County at or Gilpin County at  Please include your full name, appearance date, juror number, and reason for the request in the email.  Requests must be made at least five (5) business days prior to your appearance.
