COVID-19 AND COURT OPERATIONS (Updated May 25, 2020)

1. In light of the public health risk posed by the Novel Corona Virus and COVID-19 and the advisories and orders from the Centers for Disease Control, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, and local public health departments, recommending active steps to slow the spread of the disease and precautions to reduce the risk of exposure, effective immediately the Courts of the 17th Judicial District will be operating with reduced staff and a focus on matters of immediate concern for public safety, as follows:

  • Petitions for temporary civil protection orders and permanent protection order hearings;
  • Petitions for temporary emergency risk protection orders and hearings on emergency risk protection orders;
  • Crim.P. Rule 5 advisement for incarcerated persons and the initial setting of bail;
  • Revocation hearings on complaints to revoke probation involving an incarcerated defendant;
  • Proceedings necessary to protect the constitutional rights of criminal defendants including bond-related matters and plea agreements for incarcerated individuals;
  • Detention hearings for juvenile delinquency cases;
  • Shelter hearings in dependency and neglect cases or other juvenile proceedings;
  • Petitions for appointment of an emergency guardian and/or special conservator;
  • Hearings on motions to restrict parenting time and parental abduction prevention;
  • Emergency mental health proceedings;

When hearings are conducted for public safety matters, courts shall discourage in person participation and encourage and accommodate telephone and/or video appearance for all participants.

2. Except for all public safety matters as listed above, and hearings scheduled to proceed by electronic remote means, ALL IN-PERSON proceedings set from MAY 18, 2020 through JULY 3, 2020, are hereby VACATED AND RESCHEDULED. All parties and counsel shall contact the appropriate court to reschedule. The courts may also initiate rescheduling.  A hearing may be reset during this time frame so long as it is conducted by remote means (video, telephone, WebEx, Conference Now, as determined to be appropriate by the Judicial Officer).

       Exception to the "remote appearance only" rule:

  • Broomfield Combined Court will be holding a reduced in-person docket for the following case type:
    • Division 1C - Thursdays County Court Civil docket.

  • PLEASE NOTE: we are receiving a high volume of calls! Please have your case number available before you call. Please allow 2-3 days for court staff to reschedule your hearings before contacting the courts.

3. Jury Calls:    All jury calls are suspended through August 3, 2020. Jurors may be summoned to appear on or after August 3, 2020.


  • REDUCED PUBLIC HOURS: the Clerk’s Office will be open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Clerk's Office will be CLOSED during LUNCH HOUR, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

  • Attorneys should continue to submit news fillings electronically, through CCE.

  • Beginning May 26, 2020, the probation offices in all locations will be open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Probation will be limiting the amount of clients who are reporting for In-Office appointments and will be conducting both In-Office and Virtual/Phone appointments through the month of June.
  • Please contact your probation officer prior to comming to the office to verify if your appointment will be In-Office or Virtual/Phone.
  • It is requested that any persons coming into probation buildings are COVID symptom free and wearing a face covering.
  • If you are experiencing any possible COVID symptoms, please do not come to the office and call your probation officer. 
  • All persons coming into probation buildings will be subject to security screening and should plan additional time if requested to come for an In-Office Appointment. 


  • Social Distancing.  Social distancing shall be maintained with respect to all in-person activities within the courthouses.
    • you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 (“Novel Coronavirus”) and you have not received a subsequent test confirming that you are currently virus-free;
    • you have been in direct contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 within the past fourteen days;
    • you are experiencing a fever, cough, shortness of breath, or any other respiratory illness symptoms.
    • Until further notice, the court will permit persons to wear surgical masks and gloves in court and probation buildings if they so desire. Persons may also bring small plastic containers of hand sanitizer into court and probation buildings.

Temporary Protection orders are heard daily.  The cutoff time for filing is 10:30.

Rule 120 Hearings are Mondays at 8:30.
