COVID-19 AND COURT OPERATIONS (Updated August 2, 2020)

MASKS OR FACE COVERINGS ARE REQUIRED IN THE ADAMS COUNTY JUSTICE CENTER AND PROBATION OFFICES 

(Temporary Chief Judge Order 2020-09, Issued July 19, 2020)

1. During the month of August all court proceedings will be conducted via remote technology through telephone, video, WebEx, or Conference Now, as determined to be appropriate by the judicial officer.

The courts will continue to conduct hearings on public safety matters.  Judicial Officers have discretion to determine whether those hearings will occur in person or remotely.  Public safety matters are limited to the following:

  • Petitions for temporary civil protection orders and permanent protection order hearings;
  • Petitions for temporary emergency risk protection orders and hearings on emergency risk protection orders;
  • Crim.P. Rule 5 advisement for incarcerated persons and the initial setting of bail;
  • Revocation hearings on complaints to revoke probation involving an incarcerated defendant;
  • Proceedings necessary to protect the constitutional rights of criminal defendants including bond-related matters and plea agreements for incarcerated individuals;
  • Detention hearings for juvenile delinquency cases;
  • Shelter hearings in dependency and neglect cases or other juvenile proceedings;
  • Petitions for appointment of an emergency guardian and/or special conservator;
  • Hearings on motions to restrict parenting time and parental abduction prevention;
  • Emergency mental health proceedings;

When hearings are conducted for public safety matters, courts shall discourage in person participation and encourage and accommodate telephone and/or video appearance for all participants.

2. We anticipate that some matters may still have to be rescheduled during the month of August. The party is ultimately responsible for ensuring that a matter is rescheduled by contacting court staff. If the case has not been rescheduled by the court, the party SHALL APPEAR REMOTELY, unless otherwise authorized by the judicial officer, Please click here for instructions on how to appear remotely.

3. Jury Calls: All jury calls are suspended through August 31, 2020. Jurors may be summoned to appear on or after August 31, 2020.

4. CLERK’S OFFICE:

FOR THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF STAFF AND VISITORS, THE PREFERRED METHOD OF DOING BUSINESS WITH THE CLERK’S OFFICE IS BY TELEPHONE AND EMAIL, RATHER THAN IN PERSON AT THE CLERKS’ WINDOWS.
  • PUBLIC HOURS: the Clerk’s Office will be open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • New filings:
    • The court will accept new filings for all case types.
    • Attorneys should continue to submit news fillings electronically, through CCE.
    • SELF-REPRESENTED litigants: new fillings may be submitted by mail, in person, or by email to 17temp@judicial.state.co.us. If you are submitting your fillings by email, please read here for detailed instructions.
    • New case filings should be submitted to the Clerk’s office by 2:30 p.m. to ensure adequate processing time. 
  • Payments of fines and costs related to criminal, misdemeanor, juvenile delinquency, and traffic cases may be submitted by mail, or online at https://www.courts.state.co.us/Courts/District/Collections.cfm?District_ID=17. Payments at the counter will be accepted by check, cashier's cherk, credit card,  money order, or cash.
  • Collections: windows will be CLOSED to the public. All business will be conducted by:

5. PROBATION DEPARTMENT:

  • The Probation Department is open for regular business, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m..
  • It is requested that any persons coming into probation buildings are COVID symptom free and wearing a face covering.
  • If you are experiencing any possible COVID symptoms, please do not come to the office and call your probation officer. 
  • All persons coming into probation buildings will be subject to security screening and should plan additional time if requested to come for an In-Office Appointment. 

6. GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • Social Distancing.  Social distancing shall be maintained with respect to all in-person activities within the courthouses.
  • PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE COURTHOUSE and call the court to reschedule your court date, request to appear by phone, or receive further instructions if you meet the criteria bellow:
    • you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 (“Novel Coronavirus”) and you have not received a subsequent test confirming that you are currently virus-free;
    • you have been in direct contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 within the past fourteen days;
    • you are experiencing a fever, cough, shortness of breath, or any other respiratory illness symptoms.
  • If you are not an attorney, party, victim, witness or a provider on a specific case, please defer your visit to the courthouse to a later date.
  • All persons over the age of 10 entering or moving about the courts or probation buildings MUST WEAR A MEDICAL OR NON-MEDICAL FACE COVERING AT ALL TIMES. Persons may also bring small plastic containers of hand sanitizer into court and probation buildings.  
  • Members of the public shall follow the directions of judicial officers, court security, administration and court staff.
  • Members of the public shall follow the directions of all signs posted at the front of the courthouses and throughout the buildings.
