The JAC is seeking a flexible and responsible professional to join a dynamic team serving at-risk and delinquent youth. The per diem employee works as needed; filling in when full-time employees attend meetings, trainings, or are on vacation. Typically, a per diem can expect to work 10-32 hours a month. Per diem employees are also called upon in times of emergency coverage, filling-in schedule gaps or covering for a sick employee. Schedules are created on a month-to-month basis. Open shifts are communicated to the per diem employee one month in advance.   

The JAC is an early intervention program providing immediate screening and assessment services to youth in need. Most youth receive services at the JAC’s main location within the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility. It is the mission of the Juvenile Assessment Center to provide a coordinated, multi-agency, single entry site which contributes to the safety of youth, families, and the community through early intervention, comprehensive assessment and improved access to appropriate services.

The pay rate for this position is $16 an hour for day and evening shifts (6 a.m. - 10 p.m.), $17.50 an hour for overnight shift (10 p.m. - 6 a.m.), and major holidays pay $24-26.50 per hour.

Definition of Work:

JAC Assessment Specialist obligations include data entry, fingerprinting and mug shots, screening, and assessment of youth transported by law enforcement or referred by community partners. Specialists identify areas of risk and need, recommend post-assessment services, and conduct follow-up communication. Specialists are required to submit detailed assessment reports to District, County, and Municipal courts within a given deadline when applicable. Specialists may also facilitate crisis intervention for youth and families prior to the release of youth back to the community. In some cases, Specialists will coordinate with partnering agencies for an alternative release from the program.

Minimum Education/Professional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a preferred degree in criminal justice, social work, psychology, sociology, human development, or a closely related field.
  • Flexibility in work schedule, may be required to work holidays and overnights.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skill.
  • Must be able to pass criminal background check and UA
  • Knowledge of the youth service field and experience with at-risk youth preferred.
  • Knowledge of the motivational interviewing techniques preferred.

Examples of duties:

  • Completes fingerprints and mug shots with youth.
  • Answer phones when needed as well as make phone calls.
  • Scan Files.
  • Complete detention screens.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule including evenings, overnights and weekends.
  • Must attend meetings and trainings as scheduled by supervisor.
  • Perform intake process for youth transported to the agency.
  • Complete needs assessments through interviews with youth and family, and administering a detailed questionnaire.
  • Use questionnaire results along with other information to formulate recommendations for youth and their families.
  • Provide mediations and crisis intervention as needed.
  • Provide information and referrals to other youth service organizations based on needs assessment results.
  • Complete detailed written reports on needs assessments and case management activities.
  • Must perform all essential duties and responsibilities in an accurate and timely manner.
