The position is a full time position, with a salary of $2,520/month.

Full time Receptionist position available in the Denver Public Defender’s Office.  Individual must have strong customer service skills and be patient with and supportive of indigent people charged with crimes. Working environment is fast-paced and has a high volume of telephone calls, clientele, and interruptions.  This position will also require accurate and timely data entry into the State’s client database for tracking caseloads and statistical information.  Ability to multitask and work independently is a must. Start date for this position will be discussed with successful applicant. 


General Statement of Duties:

This position provides routine administrative and clerical duties for 6-9 attorneys, opening, updating, and closing files, processing sentence reconsideration paperwork, drafting letters, and filing documents, under the direct supervision of the Office Manager and Supervising and Managing Attorneys. At least one day per week, the person assigned to this post will process client applications in our micro-office located at the courthouse. Each administrative assistant is expected to participate in office-based trainings and consistently acquire experience and expertise in office and court processes, case file management techniques, ethical procedures, and client service principles. 

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Exhibits the ability to quickly retain information in a fast-paced environment.
  • Completes and processes assignments in an accurate and timely manner. 
  • Handles office reception area in a professional, courteous, and compassionate manner. Greets and assists incoming clients, other agency personnel, and co-workers.
  • Answers busy telephones in a professional and courteous manner, assisting callers to the best of ability.  This Involves learning a phone system with multiple lines and voice mail, screening calls, taking messages, greeting clients and referring people to the appropriate person and/or agency.
  • Learns and operates current case management database system promptly.   This may include opening, closing and updating client files in the system.
  • Understands and implements eligibility guidelines and procedures.  Assists clients in completing applications to obtain a public defender and processes those applications according to state and regional office policy. 
  • Processes mail according to office policy. 
  • Understands the closed file policy and organization of closed file room.   
  • Operates office equipment such as copiers, fax machines, personal computers or similar keyboards, sorters, printers, etc.
  • Performs “court run” activities (e.g. preparing, sorting, and distributing documents to appropriate personnel and/or agencies). 
  • Calendars tasks for attorneys and office as assigned.
  • Multitasks as needed (e.g. answering phones, processing paperwork, and making copies).
  • Attends meetings and training as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent required. 
  • No prior experience required.
  • Knowledge of standard office computer programs such as word processing, web-based search programs, and basic spreadsheet programs a plus but not required.
  • Strong preference for bilingual ability in English and Spanish. 

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to walk; sit; use hands and fingers and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to stand.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

Is frequently subject to interruptions, and multiple calls and inquiries.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Occasionally, handles emergency or crisis situations.
