General Statement Of Duties:
Supervises and directs activities of the Supreme Court Library.
Distinguishing Factors:
The Supreme Court Librarian is distinguished from other law library positions by the responsibility for the overall operation of the Supreme Court's library. In addition, the Supreme Court Librarian has responsibility for direct supervision of the Law Librarian I and Law Librarian II. This position receives supervision from a Justice of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court Librarian is a classified, non-certified position that is considered at-will and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
Essential Functions Of the Position:
Responsible for the recruitment, selection and termination of employees for the unit.
 
Establishes expectations and provides employee performance feedback on an on-going and annual basis. Assists subordinates in establishing goals. Evaluates subordinates' goal achievement through conferences or informal meetings. Makes decisions regarding subordinate's employment probationary/trial period.
 
Provides orientation and on-going training, mentoring and coaching to subordinates. Makes provisions for subordinates to attend outside training. May provide cross-training and interdepartmental training.
 
Assigns duties and responsibilities to staff; develops and establishes procedures for operating and maintaining required administrative systems.
 
Prepares library budget estimates and controls expenditures to administer approved budget. Approves expenditures as necessary.
 
Develops, plans, and submits for recommendation law library policies and procedures for the Supreme Court Library.
 
Supervises the arrangement of the Supreme Court Law Library and similar materials to facilitate ready reference. Supervises the cataloging of accessions, classifying and indexing of books, periodicals and other materials.
 
Serves as consultant to and coordinator of judicial law libraries in technical matters such as book selection, cataloging, and classifying.
 
Conducts legal research and assists patrons in referencing library materials on-line or hard copy.
 
Attends meetings and training as required.
 
Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisor Responsibilities:
Manages multiple operations or programs. Plans, provides broad direction, establishes standards, and evaluates operations for diverse programs. Has significant latitude in personnel decisions.
Minimum Education:
Graduation from an accredited American Library Association college or university with a master's degree in library science and five years of experience working in a law library.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk. The employee frequently is required to stand; sit; reach with hands and arms; and frequently perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and high precarious places. Occasionally handles emergency or crisis situations; frequently subject to interruptions, and multiple calls and inquiries. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
