Regina Walter - El Paso County Judge


Honorable Regina Walter

Judge Regina Walter was appointed to the County Court bench in August of 2008. Prior to her appointment, she was a Juvenile Magistrate in the Fourth Judicial District for a period of 21 years. She created the Fourth Judicial District’s Family Treatment Drug Court. Previously, she was a Deputy Public Defender with the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office. Judge Walter is the organizer of the Minority Overrepresentation Subcommittee of the Best Practices Court. She is a Cultural Competence Trainer for the Fourth Judicial District and serves on the Board of Directors for the Nutrition Camp School Board.  Judge Walter has organized four successful Educating Children of Color Summits in Colorado Springs. The Summit has awarded $35,500 in scholarship money to high school students over the course of the last four years, and has provided education to more than 500 teachers, students, parents and juvenile justice professionals each year. She volunteers as a coach for the Palmer High School Mock trial team. Additionally, she has provided in excess of 1500 hours of diversity training throughout the State of Colorado. Judge Walter has received numerous awards, including the 1997 State of Colorado Outstanding Judicial Officer of the Year; the Urban League Thirty-fourth Annual Equal Opportunity Award; the Thurgood Marshall Award from the US Postal Service and the African American Voice; a Coalition for Minority Youth Equality Leadership Award in 1999; the El Paso County Bar Association Portia Award for the Outstanding Woman Lawyer of the Year in 2000; Colorado Juvenile Council, 2003 Administrator of the Year; a 2006 award from The Methamphetamine Task Force of El Paso and Teller Counties; the 2006 award for Diversity Leadership from the Judicial Branch of the State of Colorado; the 2010 Liberty Bell Award from the El Paso County Bar Association, and a 2010 Freedom Fund Award for Public Service from the NAACP. She graduated from Colorado College and received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Tulsa, College of Law in 1983.
