Testing and Training during COVID-19

Update on testing and training during COVID-19

Traditionally the testing and trainings that are part of the certification and credentialing process have been done in-person. However, we are working to provide online or computer-based options where possible. Testing and training are expected to renew with a new cycle in the Spring of 2022.

Written Exam

We are moving the written exam from a paper-based format to a computer-based format. After the move is complete, test candidates will be able to schedule their exam at one of the several test centers across Colorado at a time that is convenient to them.

Trainings

The Interpreter Orientations and the Skills Building Workshop are required steps in the court interpreter certification process. We are currently converting both to virtual format.

Oral Exam

We plan to offer the NCSC oral exam in 2021. Currently we are not able to provide specific dates due to the evolving nature of the pandemic. Unlike the written exam, there is not a way to offer the certified oral exam that is not in-person. Our primary concern is to ensure that everyone can remain healthy and safe.

When we have any updates for the oral exam, we will update this webpage.

Update on testing and training during COVID-19

To all prospective interpreters:

The Office of Language Access is diligently working on creating a process that is safe for all participants. Currently, we don’t have any set dates for testing and training in 2021. As soon as we have additional information, we will update our website. Checking on this part of the page  is the best way to obtain updated information. We appreciate your continued interest and desire to become a Court Certified Interpreter.

To all prospective interpreters:

The Office of Language Access (OLA) thanks you for your continued interest in becoming a Court Certified or Credentialed Interpreter. The process to becoming an interpreter was restructured at the end of 2019, and this was the first year the 5 Steps were implemented. Due to the public health crisis that our country started facing in the Spring, we were only able to administer two of the three written exams scheduled for early 2020. The third Written Exam, Orientation, Skills Building Workshop and Oral Certification Exam scheduled for the Spring Cycle were cancelled.

We have also cancelled the rest of the testing and training events that were scheduled to start in July through October (Fall Cycle), to include the Oral Certification Exam that was  scheduled in December. The OLA currently does not provide online options to complete these steps remotely, except for the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). If you have taken and passed the written exam, you’re eligible to register for an OPI. To schedule one, please contact Patricia Ward directly at patricia.ward@judicial.state.co.us for specific details on how to do so.

Although our goal is to reconvene testing and training in 2021, nothing is guaranteed at this time. Our number one concern is making sure that everyone involved in the process remains safe and healthy throughout it. Please continue to check our website, which we will make diligent efforts to keep updated. Again, we recognize that this process can be challenging and appreciate your desire to follow your passion to become a Court Interpreter.
