Children are not allowed to attend jury service.

Each year Colorado is required to create a new jury list. A list of names is created including voter records, drivers’ licenses, non-driver ids, and state income tax records. In order to be compliant with United States Postal Service standards, each summons is run through a process to check for the most recent address available and that address is placed on the summons. Summonses are processed and mailed by a vendor, not local jury commissioners.

Since the summons process is random, there is no easy explanation to this question. Each name goes into the system with a different random number attached to it each year. In some counties with small populations, almost every qualified citizen will be called for jury service each year due to the number of jury trials requested.

The initial assignment is random. Before a trial begins, jurors may be required to complete questionnaires which provide information relevant to jury service.

Each year, the Judicial Branch receives lists of names including registered voter records, drivers’ licenses, non-driver ids, and state income tax records.

If you require an ADA accommodation for a program or service, please submit a request at least 5 business days prior to the date of the program or service to an ADA coordinator. By Colorado Revised Statues, Title 13, Article 71 Colorado Uniform Jury Selection and Service Act, §13-71-105(3), you are eligible to be a trial juror if you have been convicted of a felony. But, you are not eligible to be a grand juror. A felony conviction may be a factor the parties consider in determining whether to keep a person on the jury during the selection process at the court.

Military members are not exempt from jury duty in Colorado. If you are living more than 50% of the time in the county you are summoned for, you must report for jury service. Colorado does not consider your home of record or residence for jury duty purposes; instead, the county in which you are living controls.

Jurors who are temporarily out of the county or state: If the juror will be out of the county on their appearance date but lives in the county more than 50% of the time and will be returning within the next 6 months, they should be postponed to a time when they are back in the county.

You can be temporarily excused from jury service if you are breastfeeding a child. You must provide a medical statement. The excuse is usually for one year with the option to re-apply for another year if you are still breastfeeding your child. The statement can be from a medical professional, examples include a doctor, lactation professional, nurse, physician’s assistant and/or other medical professional. The medical statement must be on official letterhead. The medical statement needs to list your appearance date and your juror number.

You have the right to one postponement. You can request a postponement by completing the postponement section of your paper summons and emailing or mailing it to the jury commissioner, by completing the postponement request online through your county's homepage (click on Jury using the tabs above to find your county's homepage), or by contacting your jury commissioner.

State law protects a juror’s regular job. An employer cannot fire you or withhold your benefits as a result of your jury duty. An employer also cannot harass, threaten or coerce you or make demands of an employed juror that will substantially interfere with the effective performance of juror service (§13-71-134, C.R.S.).

You may use our online juror certificate. You will need your juror number, last name, court where you were a juror, and the date that you reported for jury duty. This service may take more than several days if you served in a smaller location. Please contact your local jury commissioner if you are unable to access the online certificate.

Your employer has a duty under state law (§13-71-126, C.R.S.) to pay regular wages up to $50 per day if you are regularly employed. Employers may pay more than $50 by mutual agreement. If you are a part-time or temporary worker and have worked for the same employer for three months or more, then you are a regular employee.

If you are self-employed you may ask the court for up to $50 per day for the first three days or juror service (§13-71-127, C.R.S.). Unemployed persons may apply for reimbursement of certain expenses during the first three days. After the third day, all jurors receive $50 per day from the state. There are provisions for special hardships and certain expenses. Please discuss these with the jury commissioner.

No, some adults may be sentenced to unsupervised probation. Lower risk adult offenders on supervised probation may be supervised by a private company under contract with the Probation Department. Some juveniles may be placed on probation and supervised by an agency other than the Probation Department such as the Department of Human Services.

Any charge, including a smaller charge, that a defendant or person pleads to must be accepted by the judge, including any special terms, such as the successful completion of a driver's education course.

In general, 10 a.m. is a good time to come to the court to watch criminal hearings.  Criminal hearings are usually held on Tuesdays in courtroom 1B or in the courtrooms on the 4th or 5th floors in district court.  Check with the division clerk before entering the courtroom.  To find a court case look at the computer screens to see the court docket or schedule, located on the wall in either side of the lobby after you make your way through security.  Juvenile cases are not open to the public.

You must appear in court.  A warrant for your arrest may be issued when you don't attend the hearing.  If you can't make the court date you may want to hire an attorney who is licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado to appear for you.  Click here to use the Find-A-Lawyer tool on the Colorado Bar Association's website.

You cannot appear on behalf of your child.  Your child must appear.  As a parent or legal guardian you are required to appear with the minor child for any court hearing.

You need to come to court.  Appear on the date and time indicated on your ticket/summons.

You cannot pay your ticket by mail once the 20 days have passed.  You must appear on the date and time indicated on your ticket/summons.

IF YOU NEED A DMV OJW CLEARANCE LETTER TODAY TO REMOVE A HOLD ON YOUR DRIVER’S LICENSE, YOU MUST PAY WITH CASH.  If you do NOT pay with cash, a DMV OJW Clearance Letter will be issued to you only after the following hold times for the following pay types:

• Certified Funds --- 1 Day
• Online E-Pay or Credit Card Payments --- 5 Days
• Money Order --- 8 Days
• Personal/Business Checks --- 14 Days

It is your responsibility to find out if you have an OJW hold on your driver’s license, and to make sure that if you’ve paid in full, that you’ve provided the DMV with a copy of your OJW Clearance Letter once provided to you by the courts.  Failure to do so may result in your license being suspended.

**** Please be aware that you may still owe additional fees to the Department of Motor Vehicles Division after obtaining an OJW Clearance Letter from the court.  It is the responsibility of the defendant to contact their local DMV to determine any additional costs, or any other outstanding OJW holds,  that may be owed in order to reinstate their driver’s license. ****

Contact the police department that is listed with the charge.  Their office may have information about the arrest or ticket.  If a court case was filed because of the charge contact the court where the case started.  Possible courts include the city, as well as the county or district court.

Changing your court date is known as a continuance.  You cannot call the court to ask for a continuance.  All requests  must be done by filing a motion with the court. A copy of the motion must be mailed to the other party. Blank motion forms are online here or may be in the clerk’s office.  Check with your court location.  If this is the first document that you file in the case you may pay a filing fee.

If you don't think you can pay the filing fee because you don't have enough money you could file a motion to waive the filing fee with the court. If you do not qualify, you will need to pay the full filing fee when filing your documents.

Public defenders are appointed by the court for criminal cases.  A public defender may be able to help you if you are responding to a contempt citation in a divorce or custody case.

If you don't file a response to the case with the court the judge may make a decision in the case without any information from you.   If the judge enters a default judgment on the record the person filing the case against you could evict you or collect the money that they claim you owe.

A notice to set form tells the court when you will call the clerk of the judge to schedule a hearing or trial.

• Name a date on your form that is at least 1 week after the date that you mail the notice to the court.
• You must give a copy to all persons named in the case or their attorney.
• Call the clerk of the judge on the date that you said you would call.  Click here to see when specific clerks will take your call.  Ask for possible dates for the hearing.
• Call the other person(s) named in the case or his or her attorney to see if any of the hearing dates work.
• Once you agree with the other person(s) or his or her attorney call the clerk to confirm the date.
• Complete a notice of hearing form.  The original must be filed with the court and a you should give a copy to the other person(s) or his or her attorney.  The notice to set and notice of hearing forms are here.  If you are not sure which notice to use, contact the Self-Help Center at 720-772-2501 and they will be able to assist you.

You cannot serve or give a copy of the paperwork to the person that you are suing.  Several options for service include the sheriff's office in the county or city where the person lives or works, a private process server, or a person over the age of 18 that is not involved in the case.  The person that serves the paperwork must complete an affidavit of service, JDF 98, found here.   The form must be completely filled out and signed by the person in front of a notary public.  If paperwork isn't correctly served you may have to file your court case again.

Jefferson Combined Courts has its own form combining the judge's order for a name change and the notice of publication (found here).  If you have a felony conviction, please use this form.  You must file these forms in addition to the other forms noted for name changes.  A small difference in Jefferson County is those petitions filed in County Court are only required to publish once during a twenty-one day period.  Only use this form if you are filing in County Civil Court.  Please note those petitions filed in District Court will not change, and you will need to publish the notice three times in a twenty-one day period.

The length of a court hearing varies depending on what each hearing is about and is also affected by the number of cases that the judge has on his/her schedule/docket that day.  Often, cases are called in the order in which persons named in the case check-in with the clerk.

Fines and costs are due on the day that you are sentenced.  Our court accepts cash, check, money orders, traveler's checks, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover.  If you can't pay the full amount on the day that you are sentenced you may meet with Collections to see if you qualify for a payment plan.  A $25 time payment fee is charged on all payment plans.

Once you make your way through security look at the monitors on either side of the hallway.  Look for your last name and report to the courtroom next to your last name.  Most cases related to traffic tickets will be heard in courtroom 1A or 1B.  The number tells you which floor the courtroom is on.  For example, courtroom 1A is located on the first floor.  Once you reach the courtroom, check in with the clerk in the front of the courtroom. If the clerk is not in the courtroom check in with the clerk at the window for that division on the floor where the courtroom is located.

In some cases you will meet with a deputy district attorney before entering a plea in your case.  If you plead not guilty, you will schedule your next court hearing.  In most cases if you plead guilty, you will be sentenced immediately.  Fines and costs will be charged at that time. The clerk will give you a copy of your  paperwork.  Visit the counter in the clerk’s office to pay any fines and costs.

Talk with your ex-husband or ex-wife to see if you both can agree on a lower child support amount.  If you both can't agree you could file a motion to modify child support with the court.  Visit http://www.courts.state.co.us/Forms/Forms_List.cfm?Form_Type_ID=70  to read the instructions and find the forms.  If Child Support Services is helping to collect child support in your case call them in Jefferson County at (303)271-4300.  If you are a dad you could contact the Fatherhood Program in Jefferson County at (303)271-4654.  This office is part of Child Support Services and helps dads with problems in paying child support.
