Law Clerk Applicants

Clerkships at the Colorado Court of Appeals are either a one year appointment beginning in September of each year or are longer-term appointments, at the discretion of the hiring judge. Service with the same appellate judge for more than one year will provide additional paid benefits and the opportunity for future annual salary increases.

Each judge hires his or her own law clerks. Please see the information provided below for the details on applying for a clerkship in each Judge's chambers.

Applicants must have completed at least four semesters of law school prior to submitting application materials.

Chief Judge Janice B. Davidson: 720-625-5300
Applications are accepted between August and December and interviews are conducted anytime after Labor Day. The application should include a resume, a writing sample, a law school transcript showing class rank, and not more than three recommendation letters.  Judge Davidson’s selection is based primarily on class rank, writing ability, and the interview.  Judge Davidson is no longer accepting applications for the  2013-2014 law clerk year.

Judge Daniel M. Taubman:  720-625-5200
Judge usually begins interviewing in January for the following August or September. Interested law students may submit applications by the end of December. The application should be accompanied by a writing sample, and the applicant should submit three letters of recommendation. Judge values writing experience, either on a law review or otherwise, and looks for individuals with public service or public interest experience.  Judge Taubman has hired for the 2013-2014 year.

Judge James S. Casebolt:  720-625-5330
Judge Casebolt will consider all applications received by Labor Day each year. He will not review or respond to applications received after Labor Day. Each application should contain a: 1) cover letter; 2) resume; 3) short writing sample; 4) undergraduate transcript; 5) law school transcript; and 6) 2-3 general or personal recommendation letters. Transcripts do not need to be official. Applications should have no paperclips or binder clips. All transcripts and recommendation letters should be taken out of envelopes prior to mailing. DO NOT SEND YOUR APPLICATION UNTIL IT IS 100% COMPLETE & in one package. Due to the volume of applications, incomplete applications will not be considered and will not receive a response. The judge will interview the applications in early September, typically 10-15 candidates, and generally makes an offer by October. Provided you have submitted a complete application, you will be notified by e-mail regarding the status of your application. The judge will consider both in state and out of state applicants equally. If you are out of state and planning a trip to Colorado the Judge is typically willing to meet with you during the months of July and August.  Judge Casebolt has hired his law clerk for the 2013-2014 year.

Judge John Daniel Dailey:  720-625-5340
Judge starts interviewing in November and December, and tries to hire by New Year’s.  Judge Dailey has hired his law clerks for the 2013-2014 law clerk year.

Judge John R. Webb:  720-625-5345
Judge will interview applicants of unusual qualifications (national law school, significant non-legal writing experience, prior clerkship experience) at any time. Otherwise, applications before August 1 are preferred, but applications received through September 15 may be considered. An interview and a short writing exercise are required. Interviews typically occur in August and September, with a decision by October 1, if not earlier. The application should include a resume, a writing sample (preferably not a law review article or case note), a law school transcript showing class rank, and not more than three recommendation letters (preferable from at least one person who is not a law professor). Judge gives primary consideration to class rank and writing experience. Out of state applicants are discouraged unless they will be available for a face-to-face interview in August or September. Judge Webb is no longer accepting applications for the 2013-2014 law clerk year.

Judge Dennis A. Graham:  720-625-5205
Judge interviews September through October and will hire no later than Thanksgiving. The application should include a resume, writing sample, a law school transcript showing class rank and three recommendation letters, preferably from persons who have known the applicant outside the law school setting. Judge gives primary consideration to class rank and writing experience.  Judge Graham has hired his law clerks for the 2013-2014 law clerk year.

Judge Russell E. Carparelli:  720-625-5230
Judge begins reviewing applications in early September and conducts interviews in late September and early October. Therefore, it is best to submit applications as early as possible in September. Judge Carparelli usually makes his selection in late October.  Judge Carparelli has hired his law clerks for the 2013-2014 law clerk year.

Judge Alan M. Loeb:  720-625-5305
Judge generally starts reviewing resumes pretty seriously during the summer, and accepts resumes up until about Oct. 15. Interviews begin in late September and go into October, depending on how many people are chosen for interviews in any particular year. Judge's goal is to have a clerk hired no later than Thanksgiving, who will then start work in August of the next year.  Judge Loeb has hired his law clerks for the 2013-2014 law clerk year.

Judge Robert D. Hawthorne:  720-625-5350
Applications should be submitted by November 1 and should include a writing sample and three letters of recommendation. Interviews will be conducted after the first of the year with an anticipated hiring decision by no later than March 1.  Judge Hawthorne has hired his law clerks for the 2013-2014 law clerk year.

Judge Gilbert M. Román:  720-625-5325
Judge reviews resumes in September and begins interviewing in late September until a hiring
decision is made, typically by Halloween.  Judge Román has hired his law clerks for the 20-13-2014 law clerk year.

Judge David M. Furman:  720-625-5310
Judge will accept applications until the position is filled, with the goal of hiring during the fall for the following year. He gives primary consideration to class rank and writing experience.  Applications should contain: (1) a resume; (2) undergraduate and law school transcripts; (3) three letters of recommendation, at least one not from a law professor; and (4) writing sample of unpublished material, preferably unedited by anyone else.  Judge Furman has hired his law clerks for the 2013-2014 law clerk year.

Judge Steven Bernard:  720-625-5240
Judge prefers applications to be submitted by Labor Day. The application should contain a cover letter, a resume, a short writing sample, and no more than three letters of recommendation. Interviews will be conducted in late September through October, with the goal of making a hiring decision by Thanksgiving.   Judge Bernard has hired for 2013-2014.

Judge Diana L. Terry:  720-625-5320
Judge’s intention is to have law clerk hired by November 1 for a clerkship to start the following September. Applicants should submit a resume, law school transcript, a writing sample of no more than 8 pages that is certified to be entirely the applicant’s own work, and no more than 3 letters of recommendation. Judge reserves the right to ask the applicant to prepare an original writing sample based upon a fact pattern to be supplied by the judge. Judge Terry has hired her law clerks for the 2013-2014 law clerk year.

Judge Jerry N. Jones:  720-625-5335
Judge Jones hires law clerks for staggered, two-year terms. He prefers to receive applications by mid-August, and interviews in early to mid-September. Please send a cover letter, resume, law school transcript, writing sample (preferably one not edited by someone else), and letters of reference. Judge Jones has hired his clerk for the 2013-15 term, and will begin considering applications for the 2014-16 term in August 2013.

Judge Nancy J. Lichtenstein:

Judge Lichtenstein will consider applications through September 15th for the following law clerk year. Judge Lichtenstein requires a cover letter, resume, unofficial law school transcript, writing sample (preferably one not edited by someone else), and up to three letters of reference.  Judge Lichtenstein has hired her law clerks for the 2013-2014 law clerk year. 

Judge Richard L. Gabriel:  720-625-5225
Judge begins reviewing resumes in early September, with the hope of completing interviews and hiring his law clerks by late October.  Judge Gabriel would like to receive a resume, a law school transcript, a writing sample of no more than 10 double-spaced pages (a portion of a document is fine), a list of references, and no more than three letters of recommendation, with at least one coming from a prior employer in the legal field other than a law professor, if possible.  Judge Gabriel puts a premium on superior analytical and writing abilities, particularly as demonstrated by real world experience, and good organizational skills.  Judge Gabriel has hired his law clerks for the 2013-2014 law clerk year.

Judge Gale T. Miller:  720-625-5210
Judge Miller prefers applications to be submitted by Labor Day, and interviews in August and September.  The application should include (1) a cover letter; (2) a resume; (3) an official or unofficial law school transcript; (4) a writing sample of up to ten double-spaced pages (which may be a portion of a larger document), preferably not edited by someone else; and (5) three letters of recommendation, preferably at least one from a practicing attorney or judge for whom the applicant has been employed or interned. Judge Gale Miller has hired for the 2013-2014 year.

Judge Laurie A. Booras:  720-625-5215
Judge Booras interviews beginning in late July or August with a goal of hiring no later than Thanksgiving. The application should include a resume, a writing sample of unpublished material (preferably one not edited by someone else), an unofficial transcript, and up to three letters of recommendation. The judge may also ask the applicant to prepare an original writing sample based upon a fact pattern to be supplied by the judge. Judge Booras has hired her law clerks for the 2012-2013 law clerk year.

Judge Terry Fox: 720-625-5245
Judge Fox will accept applications from May 2013 through August 2, 2013 for one two-year clerkship.  The clerk would begin his or her duties in the fall of 2014. The application should include a resume, a writing sample of unpublished material (preferably one not edited by someone else), transcripts (undergraduate and law school), and no more than three letters of recommendation (only one of the three can be a professor, and preferably one that has worked closely with the applicant). Out-of-state applicants must be available in Denver (at their own expense) for a face-to-face interview in August.  The judge may also ask the applicant to prepare an original writing sample based upon a fact pattern to be supplied by the judge.  Judge Fox’s only vacancy is for one law clerk who would start in August of 2014.
 
Judge Stephanie Dunn: 720-625-5235
Judge Dunn hires law clerks for staggered, two-year terms.  All applications should include a cover letter, resume, law school transcript showing class rank, a short writing sample and not more than four letters of recommendation.  Positions for the 2012-2014 and the 2013-2015 terms are filled.  Judge Dunn will begin to consider applications for the 2014-2016 term in August 2013.
 
Judge Anthony Navarro: 720-625-5250
Judge Navarro plans to hire one new clerk to begin in late summer/early fall 2014.  He will consider hiring for either a one or two-year term.   He would like to receive clerkship applications in paper, and he expects to begin reviewing applications in the latter part of the summer (July/August).  He would therefore prefer applications be in before Labor Day.  The application should include (1) a cover letter; (2) a resume; (3) an official or unofficial law school transcript; (4) a writing sample of up to fifteen double-spaced pages (which may be a portion of a larger document), preferably not edited by someone else; and (5) two or three letters of recommendation, preferably at least one from a practicing attorney or judge for whom the applicant has been employed or interned.  He may also ask the applicant to prepare an original writing sample based upon a fact pattern to be supplied by him.  The judge will interview the finalists.  Judge Navarro has hired for the 2013-2014 year.
