Judge Spear is a native Coloradan. He received his undergraduate degree in International Studies and German from the University of Colorado in 1982. In 1990, he received his law degree from the University of Denver.

He was a law clerk for the Honorable Michael J. Watanabe for two years. He then worked for Robert R. Gallagher and James J. Peters in the 18th Judicial District Attorneys Office. Prior to his appointment to the Bench he worked for Varnell & Associates as a trial attorney.

He has been on the Bench since February 14, 2003, hearing civil and criminal matters.
