Judge Hayes took office on January 11. 2011. His caseload consists of misdemeanor and traffic matters, felony preliminary hearings, restraining order cases, small claims, civil matter where the amount in controversy is less than $15,000.00, and eviction cases.
Judge Hayes has most recently been in private practice with Hayes Law, P.C. for the last six years. Before that he was a deputy district attorney and Chief Deputy District Attorney in the San Luis Valley. He served as the Juvenile Magistrate for Rio Grande County in 2001 and 2002, and was the municipal magistrate in Creede for four years. Before moving to the Valley, Judge Hayes was an Assistant District Attorney in the Oklahoma County DA’s Office in Oklahoma City. Judge Hayes went to law school at Oklahoma City University School of Law where he graduated summa cum laude. He was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar in 1994 and the Colorado Bar in 1995.
Judge Hayes has previously served on the Judicial Performance Commission.
