Stephen J. Schapanski was appointed Chief Judge of the 8th Judicial District by Mary J. Mullarkey, Chief Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court, on August 1, 2009. Judge Schapanski was appointed as a District Court Judge by Governor Bill Ritter on June 29, 2007, after serving as a District Court Magistrate in the 8th Judicial District since 1993. Prior to that time he was in private practice in Fort Collins from 1974 to 1993.
Judge Schapanski received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1971 and his Juris Doctor degree from Valparaiso University School of Law in Indiana in 1974. He was admitted to the Colorado bar in 1974.
Judge Schapanski is a member of the Colorado Court Improvement Committee and is the Chair of the Supreme Court Standing Committee on Family Issues.
